In the University of California
Extension Service's 1994 ranking of turfgrass that rated quality of tall fescue
cultivars at three California locations, DUKE earned the highest mean
score. DUKE makes up the second third
of our blend and GUARDIAN, another high-scoring fescue in the Extension

The most promising direction now being
taken in breeding tall fescues is toward the semi-dwarfs.
In their natural condition the
semi-dwarfs are taller than the super dwarfs—about 48 inches as opposed to
36 inches. You might conclude that the difference in natural height would be of
benefit to the super dwarfs and give them a finer leaf structure. But that isn't
the case. Semi-dwarfs, even with their greater
stature, are characterized by fine texture and thick, dark green turf with a
slow growing habit. The super dwarfs are painfully slow and develop a density
