Experience is Key to Successful Mixes and Blends
© 1997, 1998 Streamline Publications

Since 1964 Paul Albright has been dabbling in seeds.
"Dabbling doesn't sound very scientific," Albright said, "but there is an element of it in developing blends and mixes.
"Prediction is impossible in this business. Mostly we have to make a guess based on experience and education and then plant a test patch to prove out the theory."
Albright also produces custom-tailored blends and mixes for problem soils and microclimates.
"It is amazing the way things turn out. For example a 50-50 mix of bluegrass and ryegrass by seed count actually produces about 95% ryegrass in plant growth. That's because the ryegrass grows faster than the bluegrass and chokes it out.
"Mixing and blending is a balancing act that depends on experience and intuition as much as science.
"We've created erosion control and revegetation mixes matched to all eleven California bioregions. We make sure that the seeds in these mixes are of local origin so they don't displace native growth."
