 No matter the method useddrilling,
sod or hydroseedingthe site soil must be properly prepared ahead of time
if the seed or sod is to become established. The chart at right is the timetable
we have found works well for hydroseeding site preparation.
Controlling Weed
Competition
Cut and fill slopes left open for a
year or more can be expected to have weeds and weed seeds that will have to be
eliminated. Since dormant seeds may be under the soil surface it is best to
leave them undisturbed as possible. We recommend killing off established weeds,
then germinating weed seed and killing twice more. The timing is approximate for
good growth conditions and will have to be adjusted to the local environment and
time of year. Beginning or ending the weed control phase in January will
germinate both warm and cool season weed seed so both may be killed.
One Mo' Time
On the day of hydroseeding a
preemergent herbicide may be used to control some weed seed that may have been
missed earlier that could germinate along with the desired species. Care must be
taken to follow label instructions and ensure that the specified hydroseed mix
species will not be affected. O'Connor's Legume, Birdsfoot Trefoil, most clovers
and many flowers, trees and shrubs will not succumb to common preemergent
herbicides such as Trifluralin. Other crops require a third selective herbicide
application after establishment or mechanical weed removal.
